reagent rack is a functional component. Its purpose is to hold medical
sample vials for testing. But in the medical device market even
a component as simple as this has exacting specifications. Quality
is always a major factor, and as in any other industry, price is
a driver. ICI, a producer of aluminum cast high-integrity, assembly-ready components, collaborated with a medical device manufacturer to preserve the quality standards for its reagent rack, while reducing costs 45%-50%. The 9 in. long x 1.4 in. wide x 2 in. high rack was originally designed and produced as a highly machined aluminum component. ICI, with its extensive knowledge of investment casting and design-for-manufacturing, cost-effectively converted the machined component to a machining-free investment cast component. Flatness is critical to the rack's integration into the reagent equipment. ICI delivers a component that is flat over its entire length to within 0.004 in. Investment casting also produces a porosity-free, smooth surface maximizing the heat transfer properties of 356 aluminum. The rack is finished in an electroless nickel plating and delivered ready-for-assembly.
